Secret sauce for keeping your sanity

Secret sauce for keeping your sanity

Coffee. Its my crutch. Without it, there is no mama. Not a functional one anyways. I figure, if that's what I need to get me through the day, I'm doing pretty good. I mean, it could be a whole lot worse, right?

Some days I feel like I've been reincarnated. I have had so many stages in my life they each feel not like a chapter but a completely different book altogether. In this current life, my main titles are: mom, step-mom, second wife and entrepreneur. Yep, pretty cookie-cutter in this day and age.

Don't feel guilty or ashamed if you need a crutch to get through your day. No apologizing allowed here. Find your "security blanket", hold on to that sucker tight because if your days are anything like mine, the chaos is real!

I know I'm not alone here. So fill that cup with whatever your "coffee" is and laugh with me through the mom fails, the mom guilt, the long days and all the in betweens. I have five, count 'em FIVE, teenagers who are reminding me every single moment that I am not as in control as I thought I was, that I will be doubting myself like never before, and that just when I thought this was the time in my life where I had more me-time, I find myself hiding in my bathroom more than I did when they were toddlers.

These two ladies will keep you in stitches all the while relating to all their motherhood fails! Check them out!

Check out how I'm navigating through all the stages of motherhood!

The "must toss list" to keep your family safe and healthy

The "must toss list" to keep your family safe and healthy

It is overwhelming when you first start to learn about harmful ingredients. After all, the web is FULL of conflicting information. First an ingredient is listed as safe, so we buy, we use, we don't fear. Then we hear scary statistics, see disease on the rise, start to read the opposite of what we felt was true. What should we believe? Does the government have our backs and is our health their best interest? Unfortunately no.

It is up to US now, to research, to learn, to do BETTER. Because our children don't have much of a hope anymore living in this world we do. Where buying cheaper, trusting wording, making convenient choices has become more important to us. We need to go back to the way we were raised. Taking TIME to make meals from scratch, going back to whole foods, avoiding processed. But its not just what we eat that we need to take the time for anymore. Toxic chemicals are not just sprayed on our foods and added to them. They are now in our daily routines from showering, to laundering and beyond.

But where should you start? Well, every step counts. Every single item you swap out is one less that you are putting into you and your family. I recommend to everyone that their cleaning supplies should be the first to take a good look at - particularly laundry detergent and dryer sheets. Why? Because the skin is the body's largest organ and ingredients in most laundry detergents are known carcinogens which means all day long those chemicals are being absorbed into your body and causing chaos among your organs and endocrine system.

So what ingredients should you most definitely avoid? There is a very long list, and when only 42% of products carry a full ingredient list, it makes it pretty tough to know what is even sloughing off on your skin. Most liquid laundry soaps contain a chemical called sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which contain traces of a known carcinogen, 1,4-dioxin.  And more than likely any "fresh" smelling soap contains a synthetic fragrance, which typically contain pthalates.

And don't even get me started on dryer sheets. Trust me, it feels next to impossible to be willing to do laundry without them. I mean, fresh smelling clothing straight from the dryer screams "clean" right? I was a 2 dryer-sheet girl, the smellier the better for me. And now? I can't walk down the isle in the grocery store without getting an instant headache. How did I go cold-turkey and fall in love with the sweet smell of my clothes WITHOUT dryer sheets? Well, wool balls and my favorite smelling oil ever - Lemongrass. Now you could't PAY ME to use a dryer sheet. My clothes are softer, smell better, and now with using the Thieves line of laundry soap (and all other cleaning supplies now!), I have the peace of mind that there are no longer those toxins seeping into my family's skin all day long.

So there you have it. My advice on what first step to take - laundry detergent and dryer sheets. TOSS THEM. Replace with Young Living Thieves Laundry Detergent (which I will post a link to how to DOUBLE the bottle and save you money!), and wool dryer balls with a few drops of oils for the sweetest smelling, softest, cleanest clothing!

And YL has made it SUPER convenient to swap it all out at once and buy the Thieves Starter Kit. Everything for you to swap out your toxic stuff for a great price - oh, and it comes with a diffuser AND wholesale membership so when you need to replace your used items, you are saving even MORE money! Win win!

Finally more "me time".... but, who the hell am I?

Finally more "me time".... but, who the hell am I?

I’ve never  felt more out of touch with my purpose in life than I do right now. And I know I’m not alone.

I always told myself that when my kids were older, and more independent that I would have more time for myself - that my life’s purpose beyond raising children would come into focus.  Once I was through the mayhem of keeping these little humans fed, clothed and generally pointed in the right direction, that my own life compass would kick in.   Boy, was I Wrong!!

I wasn’t prepared for what I actually felt when this much anticipated independance came my way -  somehow I was even more lost…

I’m still wondering “what do I want to be when I grow up?”  I spent so long, so  focused on one thing that it’s become hard to answer the question, "beyond a mother to my children, who else am I?”

I  had no idea how difficult this phase would be.  Things I thought I was good at have either left me defeated or made me question myself even more.If you are struggling to define yourself, and feel like you desperately want to set goals and have success but aren’t sure how, you are SO not alone..

So where do we find answers, or inspiration? I’ve been soul searching and meditating, listening hard for signs. I was recently thinking back to my days in school, where we taught to brainstorm ideas, and make lists. For me, lists are a salvation, so why not use them to problem solve bigger picture issues? I grabbed my notebook and just started writing. Jotting down all my thoughts. What I love, who I want to be, what I’m good at, what I want to learn, what makes me happy. For you it may look like a jumbled mess, and that's OK. Maybe some patterns will emerge, maybe an idea or inspiration shows up loud and clear.

Putting the spotlight on you

Its not always comfortable putting the spotlight on yourself when everyone else has been top of that list for so long. But when you change the perspective and look at it as an opportunity to get to know who you are in this phase of life, it feels a little less scary. Staring at a page full of things that excite you, is pretty darn cool.

One thing I have learned, this feeling is part of a phase I’m going through and it won’t last forever.   Like other phases, just when I think I’ve got it figured out the next one is going to be waiting for me, complete with a whole new set of daunting questions and emotions.

A happier you means a happier family

Moms tend to put themselves and their needs last in the family. But this is the phase where we get to put ourselves higher on the list. Being happy is so important because a happier you means a happier family. Don’t let feeling lost scare you so much that you don’t take chances or push yourself. You are worth it, this is the only time in your life this “phase” is upon you before it’s gone as quick as the last.

On one of my toughest days, a friend reached out with some advice that I so needed to hear. “Some of the most amazing things come from moments where we feel the most hopeless.”

So if you’re feeling hopeless,  grab a notebook, start brainstorming, take chances, explore a little and see where inspiration may pop it’s head up for you.

DIY's using your Young Living premium starter kit

A list of easy to make products using the 11 oils from your PSK

You attended a class or read up on all the awesome oils that come in the Premium Starter Kit.  You order your own.  It arrives!  You open it up and you stare at the 11 oils, completely drawing a blank with what to do with them.  Sound familiar?

The biggest mistake you can make with your oils, is not using them!

So what all can you whip up using these oils?  Google and Pinterest are amazing resources to search for ideas and recipes.  I now have many tried and true recipes that I make over and over and use exclusively.  Here are some ideas to get you using those oils!

Roller Balls

Most health food stores stock single use items like these roller balls.  If you want to buy in bulk, my top two websites to do this are Amazon and Voyageur Soaps.   To make roller balls using essential oils, you will always need a carrier oil.  Carrier oils used to dilute the oils and "carry" them into the skin.  My go-to carrier oil is Grapeseed oil which I purchase in bulk size from Costco.  Young Living has a fantastic one in an easy to use bottle as well.  Check it out here - Young Living V - 6 Massage Oil.
With each 10ml roller ball, you will fill 3/4 with your carrier oil.  Then you can follow the recipes below for some simple on-the-go rollers to easily carry with you anywhere!

Lavender Linen Spray

Ditch the chemical, perfume filled sprays you can buy in the grocery stores and make your own that not only smell better and are toxic free - the constituents in Lavender actually promote relaxation and sleep!
Spritz this on your pillow before climbing into bed and you will drift off to dream land in peace!  Here's what you will need:

  •  20 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 2 oz glass spray bottle
  • purified/distilled water

Peppermint Foot Cream

Peppermint has a wonderful cooling effect and feels SO good on tired feet.  Sometimes I add an extra drop of PanAway if my feet are extra sore to give ultimate relief.  What you will need:

  •  1/4 cup shea butter
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 Tablespoons carrier oil
  • 15 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • Glass Jar or container with lid

Stinky Shoe Powder

This is a staple in my house with 5 teens.  The "no socks" craze leaves their shoes smelling like a hockey locker room (which, by the way, this stuff works awesome in sports bags on on sports equipment too!)   Here's what you need:

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 15 drops Purification Essential Oil
  • Shaker jar (I bought a parmesan cheese shaker from the dollar store!)

Anti-Wrinkle Serum

This oil is as good as gold!  Frankincense can be used to help reduce the appearance of large pores, prevent wrinkles, and lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging.  You will want to invest in a good carrier oil for the face, which you will find at any health food store.   Here's what you will need:

  • jojoba or rosehip oil filled 3/4 of your glass dropper bottle
  • 10 drops Frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil
  • Added beneficial oils as you add to your oil collection that are great for the face: Geranium, Myrrh, Rose and Patchouli
  • Glass dropper bottle

Detox Bath Salts

Spruce oils contain abundant monoterpenes, which are powerful antioxidants making this an excellent oil to bathe in for a detoxifying effect.  Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and add to your bath under the running faucet.  Soak minimum half hour. Here's what you will need:

  • 1 cup Epsom Salts
  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda
  • 5 drops NLBS essential oil

Thieves Lip Balm

This lip balm recipe is great for nourishing lips without any chemicals!  The smell will have you head over heals in love!  Melt all the ingredients except the Thieves oil, add the drops and then pour into the tube and let harden. Here's what you will need:

  •  2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp shea butter
  • 3 tsp beeswax
  • 10 drops Thieves essential oil
  • lip balm tube

Lemon Sugar Scrub

This scrub will not only leave your skin feeling smooth and silky soft, but the invigorating scent of lemon will also boost your mood!  Keep this one by your shower and use as often as you'd like!  Here's what you'll need:

  •  1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 10 drops Lemon essential oil (peppermint oil is a great addition for a wake-me-up scent!)
  • Glass jar with air tight lid

Sore Muscles Rub

PanAway will be your best friend if you find yourself with sore muscles often!  This rub is great to leave in your gym bag for before and after exercise.  Here is what you'll need:

  •  1/2 cup virgin coconut oil
  • 10 drops PanAway essential oil
  • Glass jar or container with lid

If you're looking to add to your growing oils collection, my suggestion as the next must-have oils are Cedarwood and Rosemary.  Once you have these beauties, here are two of my favorite recipes that I cannon live without!
